History is Made by the two “Rudy’s” at Ironman 70.3 Worlds

Pro Son Rudy von Berg gets Top 15 & Father Rodolphe von Berg Runner-up AG 60-64

Indeed, by just finishing the race in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the 2 “Rudy’s” made history since it was the first time that a Pro Son and his Father participated together in a World 70.3 Championship. Conscious of this family achievement, they had expected better results.

In his first World 70.3, Rudy Jr, member of the Maverick Multisport Team, was aiming at a Top 10. He finished a very respectable but disappointing 13th place due to a 5min “slotting in” penalty. To put his result in perspective, the 2016 IM 70.3 World Champion Tim Reed, finished 15th.

His father, Rudy Sr, had expected to retain his 2016 AG 60-64 world title. He ended up in 2nd place even though he had been leading the race during most of the bike and during a very short period on the run. A tactical error – a fast downhill attack in the first part of the run – followed by numerous muscles spasms and hardened legs during the second part of the run put an end to his hope of victory.

They will now look forward to the 2018 IM 70.3 World Championship in South Africa, not only to redeem themselves in their own eyes and to get some kind of revenge, but also to share an emotional experience.
