It’s that time of year when cabin fever begins to overtake the need for a book and a warm fire. By the time March rolls around, and registration begins for summer events, I’m itching to get out of the training cave and back on the road. Nothing makes this easier than the right gear, and for me, a key piece is a good pair of gloves, so I was happy to test the Women’s SELECT Softshell Glove, from Pearl Izumi.

Pearl Izumi Spring Glove

This windproof and water resistant softshell glove is made with three layers to ensure cyclists fingers stay toasty in wind and the occasional light rain. I was a initially concerned about sweaty hands, when I noticed that they were fleece lined as well, but the inner layer is thin enough to add warmth, without getting too hot despite blustery weather. (On a side note, if you are looking to up the ante with a hardcore pair of winter gloves, check out the P.R.O. AmFIB Lobster Glove.) Among training rides, I also had the chance to test them at the Skinny Tire Festival in Moab, Utah. With temps being in the mid-70’s, I threw them in my bag only as a precaution, and was extremely glad that I did. The air was very cold in the shadow of the cliffs and warmed up in the sun, but the Softshell Gloves stayed toasty and comfortable in both conditions. The fleece thumb wiping surface was helpful throughout the day and having strategically placed synthetic leather in the palms assisted with grip, and comfort for the duration of a long ride. I would also note, that I loved the bright color and reflective details for additional visibility—something you really can’t have too much of, especially if you intend to be on the roads in low-light or dark conditions. Conductive synthetic leather on the index finger and thumb is touch screen friendly, and allowed me to navigate my phone without removing my gloves.

Overall, I can easily say that the Pearl Izumi Women’s SELECT Softshell Glove, is a solid buy and a great addition for any cyclist. I would even go so far as to say, that if you intend on cycling for any time period, other than the dead of summer, these gloves are a necessity.
