Athlete’s Holiday Wish List 2017

For most athletes, ‘love’ is spelled, G-E-A-R! Check out more of our latest picks to get your holiday gift-giving season started.

Julbo Tamang Glacier Sunglasses

Retail $74.95 USD

www.julbo.com

Climbers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts of any experience level looking to put in some time in the mountains this winter, will appreciate this entry-level version of glacier sunglasses from Julbo. I chose these specifically for our Holiday list, because of the 129 years of experience that Julbo brings to the table. Knowing what features are most important, is vital to preserving eyesight in extreme environments, and vastly contributes to overall comfort. The Tamang offers a wraparound shape, with integrated side-shields, that were heaven-sent on my last trip to the top of a 14er in Colorado. High wind conditions whipped hard grains of snow into our faces, and the sunglasses kept my eyes from feeling the burn. The curved temples are the perfect level of flexibility and shaped just right to my face, without felling too tight—even under a beanie. Tamang’s cat. 4 lenses with flash +AR coating are suitable for all sports with exceptionally bright sunlight, and offer superior eye protection—a fantastic choice for this gift-giving season.

The North Face Half Dome Quilted Pullover

Retail $75.00 USD

www.thenorthface.com

We chose this warm, pullover hoodie from The North Face for our holiday list, because of its versatility. I’ve been throwing it on to run to the gym, and even with the cooler temperatures, it’s just that little bit of extra warmth for a daytime run outside. The Quilted Pullover features a heavy-weight, quilted upper body, and a polyester/fleece stretch fabric lower, for a happy combination that will keep you cozy and comfortable. I love the casual styling, and see myself wearing the hoodie through the winter and well into the spring season. The North Face Fit Finder system makes finding the right size simple—extra helpful when you’re buying for friends or family—and returns online and in-store are free. The Quilted Pullover is offered in three colors, and sizes XS to XXL. I have always found North Face sizing to be right on, but if you prefer to layer, I would recommend going one size up.

The Brave Athlete: Calm the F*ck Down and Rise to the Occasion

Written by Dr. Simon Marshall and Lesley Paterson

Retail $24.95 USD

www.velopress.com

This intuitive, refreshingly straightforward book, reads less like a session with a stuffy psychologist, and more like an authentic few hours with that one professional athlete you always wanted to pepper with questions. Dr. Simon Marshall and professional triathlete, Lesley Paterson mix their vast positive and negative experiences with years of study, into a bold soup of clarity. The Brave Athlete seeks to challenge the reader by uncovering the source of flawed thoughts and feelings, then offers evidence-based solutions. Backed by quantifiable research and filled with case studies throughout, the book presents as both compelling and inspirational evidence that the majority of personal limitations may all be in your mind. The Brave Athlete begins with a brief tour of the inner workings of your brain, and simple explanations for behavior that plagues many athletes. Attacking the 13 most common mental challenges faced by athletes, readers are asked to examine their own personal patterns—including a series of mental exercises and thought provoking worksheets—to arrive at a destination full of practical solutions for avoiding and resolving pitfalls. The Brave Athlete is a great fit for athletes of all sports, and has very real applications for every-day life.

Brooks Threshold Long-sleeve Running Top

Retail $90.00 USD

www.brooksrunning.com

The Threshold is the warmest running shirt in the Brooks line up, and hands-down my favorite cold weather top this season. Made with high-quality fabric, this long-sleeve shirt is warm and toasty, while still maintaining comfort with its breathable, moisture-wicking fabric. Flatlock seams reduce opportunities for chaffing or hot spots, and the asymmetrical funnel neckline, makes layering much more comfortable—no annoying issues with zipper stacking. Additional features, like the droptail hemline and thumb hole cuffs as well as a large size range—available in sizes XS-XL—make the Threshold a highly versatile Christmas choice for everything from running and cycling to XC skiing and snowshoeing. The Brooks Threshold Long-sleeve is available in Women’s only, but be sure to check out it’s brother, the Drift 1/2 Zip for men.
