Danner Explorer 650 Hiking Boots
Looking for a new pair of hiking boots to add to your suite of dirt crushing footwear? The all-new Danner Explorer 650 combines epic lightweight technology from Vibram with classic heritage style. These boots are built to keep you comfortable, dry, and stable no matter what terrain you plan to conquer.
The Challenge of Comfort
The dilemma with boots in my experience has always been the balance between stiff leather boots or flexible synthetic boots. For the past few years my favorite pair of boots have been the North Face Ultra Fastpack Mid Gore-Tex boots. They are not the most supportive boots, but they are light, comfortable, waterproof, and breathable. Thanks to the a synthetic outer shell, these boots provide great flexibility. I have tried various new hiking boots and hiking shoes, but I have always ended up going back to the Ultra Fastpack’s. Like I said, they have been my favorite boots, until now.
A Perfect Mixture of Materials
Danner makes the Explorer 650 using leather around the bottom of the shoe, the toe, the heel, and around the laces. Nylon is used on both sides of the boot and on the tongue between the leather. The result is a boot that has excellent foot and ankle support while still allowing your ankle to have the perfect amount of flexibility. These boots have more support than my Ultra Fastpack’s without sacrificing the flexibility, I love it. To make things even better, the Danner Explorer 650 weighs in at only 33 oz per pair. They never felt heavy or clunky to me, which has always been my problem with leather boots. I can comfortably wear these boots on an all-day hike, walking through town, or even while driving.
The Explorer 650 utilizes a Vibram SPE midsole and a Vibram Escape outsole. The rubberized EVA midsole maintains the same cushioning properties as traditional EVA, but is more durable and won’t break down as easily. This technology enhances rebound, comfort and support. The outsole features self-adapting lugs and specially formulated Megagrip compound, this outsole provides incredible grip on both wet and dry surfaces.
Danner Dry is the key to keeping your feet dry with the Explorer 650. Danner Dry provides a 100% waterproof barrier that allows moisture to escape without letting water in, keeping your feet dry and comfortable all day long. The tongue is gusseted almost to the top of the boot, making it so you can fully submerge your foot in water up to the lace hooks without worrying about water soaking your socks. Nobody likes soggy socks! While hiking Preikestolen I was able to test the waterproofing of the Explorer 650 thanks to an unexpected downpour of rain. It rained non-stop for about 2 hours, forming little puddles and mud everywhere. When I finished the hike the toe appeared from the outside to be soaked, but my feet were still dry. Danner Dry lived up to it’s promise and kept my feet dry.
These boots required little to no time for break-in. They were comfortable from the very first time I put them on and they got even more comfortable the more I wore them.
I never got any blisters from wearing the Explorer 650’s and my feet never got sore. These boots provide plenty of space in the toe box for myself with the Men’s D (Medium) width boot, but for those in need of a wider boot, the Men’s EE (Wide) option is available.
I am proud to say that I have found my new favorite hiking boots, the Danner Explorer 650. For myself, the lightweight and flexibility of these boots can’t be beaten. They are waterproof, they have excellent traction, and they look great. Pick up yours today from Amazon. Here is a women’s version as well on Amazon.
