BRINEMAN 2017 Kids, Sprint, Olympic, & Half

When the temperature drops and the colors in the mountains change we know we are at the end of another triathlon season. Big races like KONA are just around the corner.  That is when BRINEMAN happens.  The race with the shrimp/brine logo.

BRINEMAN was a part of the season change this year.  Big rain on the Friday before was concerning.  The forecast for Saturday Sept. 17th 2017 was cold.  It looked like it could be a day with rain or sunshine.  Gratefully the sun peaked out and race day was amazing.

The TRI UTAH BRINEMAN is the High School State Championships.  With a KIDS, SPRINT, OLYMPIC, & Half this triathlon offers something for every member of the family.  We decided to let our 12 year old try his first SPRINT distance.  The 3 of us got up early and the morning temp was a crisp 40 degrees Fahrenheit.  This made us nervous for our son with zero body fat.  Thankfully right when the swim started the sun popped up.

The swim happens in a private reservoir for the Still Water Lake Estates in Syracuse.  It is a ski boat course with 2 islands.  One on the west and one on the east.  This was a great open water swim.  The swim course is great for charging ahead and not sighting because each breath you can see about 20-30 yards north and south.  The view North & South is the boat docks and the shore.  I really liked this because I never got off course.  This course would be great for someone doing their first open water TRI. The water is smooth with plenty of room for all the swimmers.  The water was smoother than a pool swim. The temperature was just right at 65 degrees!  Perfect for a wetsuit.

The Bike Course went out onto the Antelope Island Causeway for the Olympic and HALF distances.  The course management was great.  Each turn was clearly marked and I even saw a USAT official on a BMW motorcycle making sure that riders were not drafting.  The roads were really smooth.   Except for the occasional construction spot with some gravel or dirt. We really enjoyed this morning ride.

The run was on the Syracuse trail system. The path was clearly marked and super flat.  The run was an out and back and by now the sun was in the sky and the finish line was full of energy and anticipation.  I was thrilled to finish the Olympic distance and find my wife and son had completed the Sprint.  We were all very grateful for such a great event on such an incredible day at BRINEMAN.

There is a special feeling of accomplishment when you complete anything hard in life.  But when you do it with your family it is much better.

Thanks Dan Aamodt for being a great Race Director.  And big thanks for making so many great TRIs available for us in 2017.  Sign up for next season here: www.triutah.com

The logo for the BRINEMAN is really great. (see the medal hanging from my bike in the photo)  The shrimp/brine with running shoes.
